Get Jiro! — 100-Card Commander Deck

Jiro, the Rogue Chef leads a Jund (black/red/green) Commander deck where every dish is a choice: serve N means put N +1/+1 counters on a creature you control, or deal N damage to a creature or planeswalker an opponent controls. Jiro has first strike, serves 2 at the beginning of combat on your turn and serves 1 whenever you cast a noncreature spell, and Bob, Lord of the Globalists makes each opponent lose 1 life every time you serve.

Get Jiro! — Sit Down, Shut Up, Eat

Commanded by Jiro, the Rogue Chef, this Jund (black/red/green) 100-Card Commander Deck is drawn from the graphic novel Get Jiro! by Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose, illustrated by Langdon Foss, and its prequel Blood and Sushi. In a future Los Angeles where food is the only thing that still matters, the great chefs have become the city's crime bosses. Downtown is split between two culinary clans: Bob's Globalists — fusion, everything imported, flown in overnight from four continents — and Rose's Locavores, who eat nothing grown beyond the city limits. Past the freeway, the Outer Ring eats from cans. In the middle, a sushi chef with nine stools and a roll of knives refuses both clans, punishes any customer who disrespects his food, and plays Bob and Rose against each other until he is the one left holding the city.

  • Serve: word for word on every card that serves — "Serve N. (Choose one — put N +1/+1 counters on target creature you control; or deal N damage to target creature or planeswalker an opponent controls.)" Omakase: the chef decides what goes on the plate and who gets it. The same dish feeds your side or cuts down the customer who insulted it.
  • Jiro in three lines: first strike; at the beginning of combat on your turn, serve 2; whenever you cast a noncreature spell, serve 1. Cast knives, dishes and mana rocks, serve every time, grow an attacker or clear the blocker, then swing.
  • Whenever you serve: Bob, Lord of the Globalists makes each opponent lose 1 life, The Columnist of the Inner City draws, Smoke-Pit Pitmaster deals 1 damage to each opponent, The Expediter makes a Line Cook, The Tuna Auctioneer makes a Treasure, Fusion Sous-Chef grows, and The Rooftop Farmer and Locavore Beekeeper gain life. Rose, Queen of the Locavores puts one more counter whenever counters are put on your creatures and gives them trample. Forty-three cards serve or read the mechanic.
  • The cuts: Blood and Sushi and Eighty-Sixed destroy, then serve; Fugu, Prepared Wrong serves 3 and makes the controller of a creature it kills lose life equal to its toughness; Hot Oil serves twice; The Omakase serves X, and again when X is 5 or more; Jiro's Yanagiba, Jiro's Deba and Jiro's Usuba serve or follow the serving.

Why Jund

Black is Bob and the business — the clan as mafia, the poison taster, the hit squad, the column that closes a restaurant. Red is Jiro's temper and the cooking line — fire, hot oil, a thrown cleaver, a kitchen in flames. Green is Rose and the produce — the rooftop farms, the heirloom ox, the last bluefin, the broth that feeds a crew. Jiro belongs to neither clan: his identity is both clans plus his own knife. Two combos close the game. Bob, Lord of the Globalists with The Thirty-Six Knives: Bob gives the Knives +1/+1 and undying, the Knives remove their counters to deal damage, aim the last points at themselves, die with no counters and return with four, for unlimited damage. The Mirror Line Cook with Strike-Breaker of the Outer Ring: each hasty copy of the Strike-Breaker untaps the Line Cook as it enters, for as many hasty 3/3s as you want, and The Mortician of Chef's Row drains for every one that dies. Jiro's Whetstone, Chef's Row Guild Seal, Signet of the Globalists, Talisman of the Fish Market and Rose's Seed Vault ramp; The Secret Recipe tutors; Eighty-Sixed, Off the Menu, Blood and Sushi, Thrown in the Dumpster, The Inspector from City Hall and Fugu, Prepared Wrong remove threats; The Kitchen Fire is the single sweeper; The Global Supply Chain, The Columnist of the Inner City, The Locavore Manifesto and Mise en Place draw; Nobody Touches My Kitchen and Thrown Back Across the Counter protect.
