Akira — Neo-Tokyo Is About to Explode

Led by the partners Tetsuo Shima, the Unbound and Shotaro Kaneda, Capsule Leader, this Izzet (blue/red) 100-Card Commander Deck is set in Neo-Tokyo, 2019, rebuilt on the bay after a black dome swallowed the old city and rotting two months before an Olympics that will never happen. Kaneda leads the Capsules, a biker gang of dropouts; Tetsuo is the smallest of them. One night on the expressway he hits a child with an old man's face — an escaped Number — and the Army takes him. Colonel Shikishima's project wakes something in him, and from then on Tetsuo does one thing: he gets stronger, and everything around him breaks. The cast includes Kaori, Kei, Ryu, Colonel Shikishima, Doctor Onishi, Nezu, the Numbers Takashi, Kiyoko, Masaru and Akira, Kaisuke, Yamagata, Joker and the Clowns, the SOL satellite and the red bike.

• Psychic Surge: word for word on twenty cards — "Put N +1/+1 counters on target creature you control. Then that creature deals N damage to each other creature." Every time the power comes out, one creature grows for good and the wave hits all the others — enemies, allies, his own gang.
• Tetsuo and Kaneda: Tetsuo surges on every instant or sorcery you cast and, at five +1/+1 counters, has trample and hexproof. Kaneda gives Vehicles +1/+1 and haste — and Vehicles aren't creatures until crewed, so the wave spares them — and grows whenever an opponent's creature dies in the rubble.
• The ruins: Kaori, Neo-Tokyo Is About to Explode and the Army Psychic Researcher read the wave; The Ruins Spread and the Engulfing Mass read the deaths it causes. The only side element is Debris tokens.

Why Izzet

Blue is psychic power and the lab that measures it — the Numbers, the files, telekinesis and counterspells as force fields. Red is what that power does to a city and to the boys who cross it on bikes — explosions, collapsing bridges, lasers, rage. Two combos close the game: The Capsule Tin with A Handful of Capsules and three artifact mana surges on every loop for unlimited counters while every other creature dies and Neo-Tokyo Is About to Explode drains each opponent; The Numbers' Projection on Resistance Courier makes unlimited hasty fliers. The Cryogenic Core, Army Requisition Badge, Capsule Gang Patch and Red-and-White Capsule ramp; The Akira Files tutors; Laser Burst, Telekinetic Hurl, SOL and Kaneda's Laser Rifle remove threats; Psychic Barrier and Psychic Feedback counter; July 16, 1988 sweeps; Doctor Onishi and Military Surveillance Grid draw.
