Blue Beetle — 100-Card Commander Deck

Jaime Reyes, Blue Beetle leads a Jeskai (blue/red/white) Commander deck where the armor builds its own arsenal: form a weapon creates a Scarab Weapon token attached to one of your creatures, and you choose its shape each time — flying, first strike, trample or hexproof, plus +1/+1. Jaime forms one whenever he attacks and another for {3} once each turn, at instant speed, then draws a card whenever an equipped creature of yours deals combat damage to a player.

Blue Beetle — Form a Weapon

Commanded by Jaime Reyes, Blue Beetle, this Jeskai (blue/red/white) 100-Card Commander Deck follows a kid from El Paso who comes home from college to a family about to lose its house, takes an afternoon job at Kord Industries and walks out with a fast-food box holding an alien scarab. Khaji Da, a weapon of the Reach — an empire that conquers worlds one scarab at a time — fuses to his spine and grows a blue armor around him. That armor has no arsenal: it builds the weapon the moment needs, a blade, a cannon, wings or a shield, and argues with him about which. The cast: the Reyes family — Alberto, Bianca, Milagro, Rudy and Nana — with Brenda and Paco; the Beetles before him, Dan Garrett and Ted Kord; Jenny Kord, Booster Gold and Skeets, Traci Thirteen and La Dama; and against him Victoria Kord, Conrad Carapax in his OMAC armor, Jarvis Kord's drones, the Black Beetle and the Reach.

  • Form a weapon, word for word on twenty-eight cards: "Create a Scarab Weapon token attached to target creature you control." The token carries the whole rule: as it becomes attached to a creature, choose flying, first strike, trample or hexproof; the equipped creature gets +1/+1 and has the chosen ability; Equip {2}. Move it, and you choose again. No counters, no dice — one real Magic keyword at a time, and the token stays on the battlefield when its bearer dies.
  • Jaime in three lines: he forms a weapon whenever he attacks, forms another for {3} once each turn at instant speed, and draws a card whenever an equipped creature you control deals combat damage to a player. Khaji Da, the Scarab rides in the 99: whenever an Equipment becomes attached to one of your creatures, it deals 1 damage to any target.
  • The family and the Beetles: Ted Kord, the Second Beetle makes your equip abilities cost {0} and draws on your first weapon each turn; Booster Gold, Hero from the Future makes a Treasure per weapon; Bianca Reyes gives equipped creatures ward {2}; Alberto Reyes gives them +1/+0 and vigilance; Nana Reyes pings the player an equipped attacker goes after; Brenda del Vecchio puts a +1/+1 counter on every newly equipped creature; Rudy Reyes forms a weapon on each artifact spell.
  • Weapons mid-combat: Arm Cannon, Plasma Blade, Scarab Wings, Energy Shield, Threat Assessed and Whatever I Need form a weapon at instant speed, on the creature that needs it, when it needs it.

Why Jeskai

Blue is the alien technology and the Kord science — the scarab, the drones, the blueprints, and the counterspell that is Jaime refusing the infiltration protocol. Red is momentum and plasma — a nineteen-year-old who hits first, Nana's old machine gun, Rudy bolting alien parts together in the garage. White is the family and the hero — the shield, the mother at the door, the mural on the corner store. No black: Jaime refuses to kill, and that refusal is the story. No green: nothing grows here, everything is built.

Two combos close the game. Kord Override: Ted Kord, the Second Beetle plus Khaji Da, the Scarab, any Equipment and two creatures — equipping costs {0}, so the Equipment moves back and forth as often as you like and every attachment deals 1 damage: unlimited damage, and unlimited +1/+1 counters with Brenda del Vecchio. The Production Line: Victoria Kord, Chief Executive copies Reach Infiltrator Drone, the copy untaps Victoria, and she copies again — unlimited hasty flyers. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Izzet Signet, Talisman of Conviction, Kord Fusion Cell and The Bug's Hangar ramp; The Kord Archive, Blueprints from Rudy's Garage, Jenny Kord and Fusion with the Host tutor; Sent Back to the Reach, Arm Cannon, Plasma Burst, Scarab Teleport, Conrad Carapax and La Dama remove threats; Threat Assessed and Override Protocol counter; Kord Orbital Strike is the only sweeper, and your Equipment is still there afterwards; The Voice in Jaime's Head, Reyes Family Dinner, Ted Kord and the commander himself draw. The 35 lands include ten places from the story, from Palmera City and The Reyes Family Home to Ted Kord's Bunker and The Pyramid of the Scarab.
