Far Cry — The Definition of Insanity

Commanded by Vaas Montenegro, Pirate King, this Rakdos (black/red) 100-Card Commander Deck starts on Rook Island, somewhere in the Pacific: a group of young Americans skydive onto the wrong island and Vaas's pirates capture them to sell to Hoyt Volker; Jason Brody escapes, Citra's Rakyat ink him with the Tatau and he sets the archipelago on fire. Around that core stand the series' other tyrants and zealots: Pagan Min in Kyrat, the Seed family of Eden's Gate in Montana, Antón Castillo in Yara, the twins Mickey and Lou of New Dawn, the Jackal, and the neon Blood Dragon. The cast includes Hoyt, Jason, Citra, Dennis Rogers, Dr. Earnhardt, Buck Hughes, Willis Huntley, Ajay Ghale, the four Seeds, Hurk Drubman Jr., Dani Rojas and Sergeant Rex "Power" Colt.

• Insanity: word for word on twenty-nine cards — "Insanity {cost} — <effect with X>. (Pay its cost: put an insanity counter on this, then do it. X is the number of insanity counters on this. Remove them at end of turn.)" The same ability, used again in the same turn, does more each time. Vaas deals X damage, Citra drains X life, Hoyt makes X Pirates, Antón makes X Treasures, Faith steals a creature with mana value X or less.
• Vaas is the plan: Insanity abilities you activate cost {1} less, and whenever you put an insanity counter on a permanent, each opponent loses 1 life. Lay down Insanity permanents, then one turn pour all your mana into the same button.
• Forty-two cards carry or feed it: cost reducers (Vaas, Hoyt, the Tatau), cards that place insanity counters for free (Dennis Rogers, Ajay Ghale, Hurk, Mushroom Tea, Same Thing Over and Over) and rewards (Did I Ever Tell You the Definition of Insanity?, Rex Colt, The Monologue).

Why Rakdos

Black is the ransom, the cult, the drugged tea, the money and the sharks. Red is fire — burned fields, outposts, the flamethrower, rage. No white: there's no law on Rook Island. No blue: nobody plans, they just do it again. Two combos close the game: Vaas with the Tatau or Hoyt Volker brings his Insanity {2} to {0} for unlimited activations, each one draining and hitting harder; The Rakyat Blood Ritual with Hoyt's Blood Money loops life loss and gain until the table dies. Hoyt's Poker Chips, Pirate Radio, Rook Island Signal Flare and Vaas's Lighter ramp; Buck Knows a Guy tutors; A Bullet for the Hero, Thrown to the Sharks and Molotov Cocktail remove threats; The Collapse sweeps; Eden's Gate Sermon and Willis Huntley draw; Liberate the Outpost takes an extra combat.
