Lies of P — Truth or Lie

Commanded by P, the Puppet, this Grixis (blue/black/red) 100-Card Commander Deck is set in Krat, a Belle Époque city that ran on puppets: Venigni's factories built them, Geppetto designed their hearts, and the Grand Covenant bound them — a puppet obeys its maker, a puppet can't harm a human, a puppet can't lie. Then came the petrification disease, then the night the puppets went into frenzy and killed the city. P wakes in a train carriage, and a blue butterfly guides him to Hotel Krat. He's a puppet. Puppets don't lie. Every time someone asks him a question, he lies anyway — and with every lie his heart becomes a little more human. The cast includes Geppetto, Sophia Lesto, Gemini, Eugénie, Lorenzini Venigni, Antonia, Polendina, Alidoro, the Red Fox and the Black Cat, Simon Manus, Laxasia the Complete, Romeo, King's Flame Fuoco, Champion Victor and the Nameless Puppet.

• Truth or Lie: word for word on thirty-two cards — spells, creatures on arrival, an artifact, a land — "Choose one — Truth — … Lie — … (If you choose Lie, you lie.)" Truth is usually the better deal for you (more cards, more life, a real counterspell, an untap); Lie usually hits an opponent (a discard, a drain, a bounce, a tap) — and it's the only thing that makes P human.
• P in four lines: whenever you lie, put a humanity counter on P; +1/+1 for each one; with five or more, P is a Human instead of a Puppet, isn't an artifact, and whenever you choose Lie you may also choose Truth. The price: Puppet Frenzy in Lie mode spares artifacts… and P isn't one any more.
• The rewards for lying: Sophia draws, Venigni builds a puppet, Polendina makes a Treasure, Fuoco burns each opponent, A Lie Told Well drains; Champion Victor, Alidoro and the P-Organ grow or draw. Forty-six cards carry or read the mechanic; the only side element is 1/1 Puppet tokens.

Why Grixis

Blue is the workshop and the lie itself — Geppetto's craft, Venigni's catalogue, the clockwork heart, the answer that isn't quite the answer. Black is the dying city — petrification, Ergo drawn from the dead, the Alchemists, the frenzy. Red is the Legion Arm and the fire — Fulminis, Flamberge, Fuoco, Venigni's furnaces. No white: the Grand Covenant is the law, and the whole deck is about breaking it. Two combos close the game: Geppetto, the Puppet Maker copies the Venigni Works Courier whose Truth mode untaps him, for any number of hasty flying puppets; Isochron Scepter with Wind the Mainspring and three artifact mana makes unlimited mana for Fulminis Discharge. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Rakdos Signet, Talisman of Creativity, the Stargazer and the P-Organ ramp; The Wishstone tutors; Pandemonium, Flamberge and Petrification Disease remove threats; The Grand Covenant, Aegis and A Comforting Lie counter; Puppet Frenzy sweeps; Ergo Hunger and Sophia Lesto draw.
