Mobile Suit Gundam — Sortie

Led by the partners Amuro Ray, Newtype Ace and RX-78-2 Gundam, the White Devil — the pilot and his suit, the Gundam being a legendary Vehicle that can be your commander — this Azorius (white/blue) 100-Card Commander Deck is set in Universal Century 0079. The Principality of Zeon declares independence from the Earth Federation and wins the first month of the war with a new weapon, the Mobile Suit. On Side 7, a fifteen-year-old civilian climbs into the Federation's secret prototype during a raid, reads the manual in the cockpit and wins. From there to A Baoa Qu he launches from White Base, a space carrier crewed by teenagers, and becomes what the war had no name for: a Newtype. The cast includes Bright Noa, Fraw Bow, Mirai Yashima, Sayla Mass, Kai Shiden, Hayato Kobayashi, Ryu Jose, Char Aznable, Lalah Sune, Ramba Ral and the Black Tri-Stars, with Kamille, Judau and Quess from the next generation.

• Sortie: an ability word printed on fifteen pilots — "Sortie — Whenever this creature crews a Vehicle, <effect>." Kai deals 2 damage, Hayato taps a blocker, Ryu makes the suit indestructible, Sleggar gives first strike, Lalah draws, Sayla creates a pilot, Quess makes the suit unblockable, Char adds +3/+0 and haste.
• Newtype: just a creature type — but if a Newtype you control crewing a Vehicle causes a Sortie ability to trigger, it triggers an additional time. Amuro's own Sortie scries 1 and gives the Vehicle hexproof — twice.
• The White Devil: crew 2, and whenever it attacks choose one — Beam Rifle deals 3 damage to an opponent's creature, or Shield makes it indestructible. More than twenty-five other cards read crewing, pilots or Newtypes; there isn't a single counter in the deck.

Why Azorius

White is the Federation and the carrier — a chain of command, a crew that became a family, mass-produced GMs, war bonds. Blue is engineering and the Newtype — Tem Ray's data, the learning computer, Minovsky physics and the flash that moves Amuro before the shot. The Mobile Suits are colorless artifacts: anyone can climb in. Two combos close the game: Amuro, Fraw Bow and Mirai Yashima crew and untap without limit while Mirai drains each opponent, and The Learning Computer imprinting Emergency Restart with three artifact mana untaps everything forever. Minovsky Reactor, Earth Federation Insignia, Federation Comm Relay, Haro and Federation War Bonds ramp; Operation V tutors; Beam Saber Slash, The Last Shooting and The Axis Shock remove threats; Minovsky Particle Jamming counters; The Solar Ray sweeps creatures only, so every suit left in the hangar survives; Bright Noa and The Newtype Flash draw.
