The Last Kingdom — 100-Card Commander Deck

Uhtred of Bebbanburg leads a Boros (red/white) Commander deck about making a name: every creature you control has renown 1 — the first time it deals combat damage to a player, it gets a +1/+1 counter and becomes renowned — and each creature that becomes renowned draws you a card. Deploy warriors, connect once with each, draw, then cash in the renowned army.

The Last Kingdom — Destiny Is All

Commanded by Uhtred of Bebbanburg, this Boros (red/white) 100-Card Commander Deck draws on Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories and the television series. Northumbria, 866: the ten-year-old heir of Bebbanburg watches his father fall to the Danes at Eoferwic and is taken by the victorious jarl, Ragnar the Fearless, who raises him as a son. Born Saxon, raised Dane: when Kjartan burns Ragnar in his hall, Uhtred goes south and swears, reluctantly, to Alfred of Wessex, the last king standing. He wins Alfred's battles — Cynuit, where he kills Ubba, then Ethandun — never gets the reward, fights for Alfred's children Æthelflæd and Edward, then for Æthelstan, first king of all England. And he wants only one thing: Bebbanburg, the fortress on its rock his uncle stole from him. The cast includes Alfred, Æthelflæd, Æthelstan, Brida, Earl Ragnar, Ravn the blind skald, Finan, Sihtric, Osferth, Leofric, Steapa, Hild, Father Beocca, Father Pyrlig, Sigtryggr, Stiorra, Haesten and Skade.

  • Renown: the existing Magic keyword, word for word — "Renown N (When this creature deals combat damage to a player, if it isn't renowned, put N +1/+1 counters on it and it becomes renowned.)" It fires once per creature and leaves a permanent state.
  • Uhtred is the plan: Renown 2, other creatures you control have renown 1, and whenever a creature you control becomes renowned, draw a card. He makes his name by walking out of the shield wall alive — and the men beside him become famous with him.
  • Forty cards carry or read it: Alfred, King of Wessex gives renowned creatures +1/+1 and vigilance and makes a Saxon Warrior on any turn one became renowned, Æthelflæd gives them double strike on attack, Osferth lifelink, Sigtryggr menace, the wyvern banner trample, The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle draws; Single Combat at Cynuit, The Skald's Saga, Father Pyrlig, Æthelstan and Bebbanburg make a creature renowned without combat. One keyword, one state, no custom counter, thirty-two creatures.

Why Boros

Red is the Dane they made of him — Earl Ragnar, Brida, Ravn's songs, haste and the fury of the shield wall. White is the Saxon oath he keeps without loving it — Alfred's law, the fyrd, the Church that shelters and despises him, the household of Bebbanburg. Two combos close the game: Ravn, the Blind Skald copies Cuthbert's Pilgrim for infinite hasty pilgrims, each drawing as it connects, and Uhtred's sword Serpent-Breath with The War That Never Ends takes unlimited combats. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Signet of Wessex, Thor's Hammer Amulet, Silver from Lindisfarne and Danegeld ramp; Alfred's Summons tutors; Sanctuary in the Abbey and Driven into the Marsh remove threats; The Slaughter at Ethandun sweeps; The Wergild draws; Wyrd Bið Ful Āræd protects.
