Hunter x Hunter — The Hunter Exam

Commanded by the partners Gon Freecss (Enhancer) and Killua Zoldyck (Transmuter), this Jund (black/red/green) 100-Card Commander Deck follows two twelve-year-olds who sit the Hunter Exam the same year: a fisherman's nephew looking for the father who left to make a career, and the heir of a family of professional assassins who walked out the door. The licence opens two things for them, and the deck is built from nothing else.

• Nen: thirty-one cards carry it word for word. A creature's category is the last word of its type line, on the hexagon Enhancer – Transmuter – Conjurer – Specialist – Manipulator – Emitter. Its activated abilities cost {1} less for each other creature you control of an adjacent category and {1} more for each one of the opposite category, so every creature you cast reprices every creature already in play. Gon and Killua are neighbours and discount each other from turn two; Illumi Zoldyck, a Manipulator, makes his brother's lightning more expensive — the needle in his head, written as a rule.
• Greed Island: ten Restricted Slot Cards numbered 1 to 10 — Risky Dice, Blue Planet, Sage's Aquamarine, Hormone Cookie, Golden Dictionary, Lucky Alexandrite, Paladin's Necklace, Spring of Rejuvenation, Seed of the Hundred Harvests and The Monster Pouch — each a real card you can cast, or Bind: exile it from your hand into your Binder, forever.
• The Binder: Greed Island Binder says that at the beginning of your upkeep, if all ten slots are filled, you win the game. Bound cards stay in the Binder even if the artifact dies, but without it in play there is no win — the answer is always visible. Only Ging Freecss, who built the game, binds from the graveyard; Gon draws a card and grows every time you bind.
• Two combos: Godspeed (Killua, Biscuit Krueger and three Enhancers or Conjurers drop the Transmuters to zero and loop Killua's 2 damage) and Bungee Gum (Hisoka Morow, Blue Planet and Razor, Game Master turn every loop into mana and 2 damage to each opponent).

Why Jund

Green is Gon and Whale Island, the Chimera Ants who become what they eat, and Ging gone into the wild to build a game. Red is aura pushed outward — Ren, Jajanken, lightning, the Big Bang Impact, Heavens Arena. Black is the Zoldyck family and the Phantom Troupe: assassins who bill by the head, thieves who emptied an entire auction, and The Miniature Rose hidden in an old man's heart. Hunter License, Hunter Association Seal and Zoldyck Family Crest ramp; The Hunter Site, Fortune Teller and Masadora tutor; Thunderbolt, Leave and First Comes Rock remove.
