Mission: Impossible — 100-Card Commander Deck

Ethan Hunt, IMF Field Agent leads an Izzet (blue/red) Commander deck where every card is a mission: briefing exiles the top card of your library and you may play it this turn only — otherwise the message self-destructs. Playing a briefed card is accepting the mission: Ethan briefs at every combat and deals 1 damage to each opponent for each mission you accept.

Mission: Impossible — Should You Choose to Accept It

Commanded by Ethan Hunt, IMF Field Agent, this Izzet (blue/red) 100-Card Commander Deck follows the Impossible Missions Force, which officially doesn't exist: safe houses rented in dead people's names, agents whose files say they've retired, and every operation that begins the same way — a message hidden in sunglasses, a disposable camera, a Moscow payphone, a record in a London shop, a copy of the Odyssey — "Your mission, should you choose to accept it…", and five seconds later the message goes up in smoke. Ethan Hunt has never said no. The cast includes Luther Stickell, Benji Dunn, Ilsa Faust, William Brandt, Jane Carter, Grace, Kittridge, Alan Hunley, Erika Sloane, and against them Jim Phelps, the White Widow, Solomon Lane and the Syndicate, August Walker, Kurt Hendricks, Sabine Moreau, Gabriel and the Entity, with the NOC list, the Rabbit's Foot and the Cruciform Key.

  • Briefing: word for word on thirty-six cards — "Exile the top card of your library. Until end of turn, you may play that card." Play it this turn — that's accepting the mission — or it stays in exile: the message self-destructed. Fifteen cards read "whenever you accept a mission".
  • Ethan in three lines: haste; briefing at the beginning of combat on your turn; and whenever you accept a mission, he deals 1 damage to each opponent. Every turn there's one more card you must use now, and every card used hits the table. Luther Stickell, the Best Hacker Alive draws a card on every mission accepted.
  • The payoffs: Kurt Hendricks deals 2 damage, the White Widow makes Explosives, Jane Carter grows, Nyah becomes unblockable, The Impossible Missions Force recruits a 1/1 IMF Agent, Max and the Cruciform Key make exiled cards cheaper. No custom counter, and not a single mask in the deck.

Why Izzet

Blue is the briefing and the people at the keyboard — the message device, the NOC list, Luther in the earpiece, Benji behind the screen, the Secretary who disavows. Red is everything Ethan does with five seconds' notice — the run, the climb, the wrong-way motorbike, the HALO jump, the exploding gum. No white: the institution disavows him in every film. No black: Ethan never trades a teammate for the mission. Two combos close the game: Benji Dunn, Field Technician with Body Double makes infinite hasty Benjis, and The Plutonium Core with Luther's Override makes unlimited mana for Final Reckoning or for The Rabbit's Foot to brief the whole library. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Izzet Signet, Talisman of Creativity and The Cruciform Key ramp; The NOC List tutors; This Message Will Self-Destruct, Red Is Dead and The Briefcase Switch remove threats; Disavowed and Abort the Mission counter; The Kremlin Explosion sweeps; The Odyssey Message draws; Mission Accomplished takes an extra turn.
