The Same Man and the Scars

Type: Token

Rarity: Token

Mana Cost: —

Color Identity: Colorless

Reminder card. THE SAME MAN: if another creature named Logan would enter the battlefield under your control, exile the one already on the battlefield instead of putting it into a graveyard. The creature that entered enters with all counters the exiled one had on it, plus an additional +1/+1 counter, and you draw a card.

The legend rule punishes every other deck in the multiverse. Here it is the staircase. Eighteen cards in this deck are named Logan and each one inherits the scars of the one before it, so the deck wants to draw as many of them as it can. Nothing changes sides, nothing comes out of a graveyard, nothing comes back: the same man replaces the same man, and what he carries over are his injuries.

ADAMANTIUM: this creature can’t be destroyed. If damage would be dealt to it, prevent that damage and put that many scar counters on it instead. Then, if it has scar counters equal to or greater than its toughness, sacrifice it.

HEALING FACTOR N: at the beginning of your end step, remove up to N scar counters from this creature. You lose 1 life for each counter removed this way.

You do not kill Logan, you wear him out. Scar counters are not damage: they do not clear at end of turn, they add up from one turn to the next, and when they reach his toughness he goes down. The healing factor takes them off and charges you life for it. Every incarnation has its own N — the cage fighter heals at 3 with nothing but bone, the Ronin heals at 1 and pays double, and Old Man Logan is printed at ZERO.

“A hundred and ninety years, one body, and a running total nobody else can read.”
